Smuggling in Paraná: Federal Revenue Service and Military Police Seize R$ 300,000 in Goods

The Federal Revenue Service and the Military Police carried out a joint operation that resulted in the seizure of contraband goods worth R$ 300,000. The bust took place on BR-277 in Irati, in the state of Paraná, during a routine inspection by authorities. The smugglers involved in the scheme used satellite internet to communicate with “scouts,” who monitored and warned them of the presence of police and inspectors on the highways.
The smugglers were caught with more than 1,300 items brought from Paraguay, most of which are prohibited from sale in Brazil. Among the seized goods were 200 e-cigarettes, 500 vials of anabolic steroids, 500 weight-loss pens, 100 bottles of cosmetics, and other medications in blister packs. This operation reinforces the Federal Revenue Service’s commitment to combating smuggling, illicit trade, and tax evasion, with the aim of protecting free competition in the country.
What are smuggling and illicit trade?
The Penal Code defines smuggling as the entry into Brazilian territory of prohibited goods, with a prescribed penalty of 2 to 5 years in prison, which may be increased in cases involving air, sea, or river transport. On the other hand, tax evasion refers to the importation of legally permitted goods without paying the required taxes, with a penalty ranging from 1 to 4 years in prison. The difference between the two crimes lies in the nature of the goods and the tax issues involved.
In total, four men involved in the scheme were arrested and handed over to the Federal Police in Ponta Grossa. Their identities were not disclosed by the authorities. The coordinated operation between the Federal Revenue Service and the Military Police highlights the importance of joint efforts in combating illegal practices that harm the country’s economy and security.
Recent operations in the region
In addition to this seizure, other operations targeting various crimes have taken place in the region. A man was arrested on suspicion of breaking into the home of his own 79-year-old father and stealing a safe containing cash and valuables. In another incident, a truck driver was run over by his own truck, which veered into oncoming traffic and collided with another vehicle on BR-376. Young people have also been carrying out scams, such as pretending to be friends with retirees to obtain money and run up debts in their names.
