Products pose risks to public health and safety and cause financial losses to the state.

The police chief of Decon (Specialized Consumer Protection Police Station), Rogério Ferreira, stated that the sale of counterfeit products in Mato Grosso comes mainly from Eastern countries and can have an impact on the health and safety of the population.

The goods range from clothing to medicines in the state.

If the sale is illegal, then obviously the entire chain is illegal. And that poses a serious risk to the health and safety of consumers

According to the police chief, the population can be harmed by products that are not approved by Anvisa (National Health Surveillance Agency) and Inmetro (National Institute of Metrology, Quality and Technology), agencies that control the quality of products circulating in the country.

“Imagine buying a medicine that has been smuggled into the country without being registered with Anvisa. Who can guarantee that the medicine is genuine? What is in that substance that you are injecting into your body? Is it really the medicine you intend to take? This poses a serious risk to the health and safety of consumers,” he said.

According to Ferreira, most of these products come from the East, imported illegally and without paying taxes, which also causes financial losses to the state.

“Unfortunately, we don't have a survey for the state of Mato Grosso. But the loss is certainly significant, because if Brazil loses approximately R$ 500 billion every year to piracy and approximately 400,000 formal jobs are not created, then it is understandable that in Mato Grosso there are also [major consequences],” said the police chief.
