Police Arrest Businessman Suspected of Counterfeiting World Cup Merchandise in Piracicaba

Illegal trade results in estimated losses exceeding R$ 340,000
On Friday (3), the Civil Police launched “Operation World Cup” in Piracicaba, in the interior of São Paulo, which resulted in the arrest of a 32-year-old businessman caught in the act. He is alleged to be responsible for three establishments that supposedly sold counterfeit soccer-related products.
According to VTV News, the investigation began with intelligence work that identified the possible sale of counterfeit items. Police officers observed evidence such as the unauthorized use of registered trademarks, as well as the volume and variety of products on display for sale.
Once the irregularities were confirmed, the operation was carried out simultaneously at the three establishments, led by the Joint Judicial Police Unit (UPJA) with support from the Civil Guard and the Brand Protection Group (BPG), an organization dedicated to combating piracy, smuggling, and unfair competition.
In total, more than 1,500 items were seized, including clothing, shoes, watches, accessories, and sports jerseys. The value of the seized goods may exceed R$ 340,000, based on prices charged in the black market and the resale margin identified during the investigation.
““In addition to the economic losses caused to legally established companies, the sale of counterfeit products poses significant risks to consumers, since these goods are not subject to quality, safety, or origin controls, nor do they come with a warranty, and may have defects that compromise their usability and durability,” said the Civil Police.

Investigations are ongoing to identify others who may be involved in the product distribution chain. The operation was coordinated by police chiefs José Donizeti de Melo and André de França Oliveira.
