Highway patrol officers from the Highway Patrol Battalion (BPMRv), stationed at the Maracaju Operational Base, seized a shipment of foreign goods lacking tax documentation in the early hours of Monday (6). The seizure took place on State Highway MS-162 during an operation aimed at combating cross-border crime.
Stop and Search of the Back Seat: The officers were conducting a traffic inspection when they ordered a VW Polo to pull over. During the inspection of the vehicle, the team found bundles and packages of Paraguayan goods scattered across the back seat and inside the trunk.
When questioned by military personnel, the driver confessed that he had picked up the goods in the neighboring country and intended to transport and resell them in the city of Campo Grande (MS).
Seized Items
A detailed inspection resulted in the following items being counted:
3 bundles of watches;
2 packages of perfume;
6 large packages of eyeglasses;
8 small packages of eyeglasses.
Disposition and Loss
Federal Police authorities in Dourados were notified of the incident and directed that all the goods and the vehicle be transferred to the Federal Revenue Service, a process that will be carried out by prior appointment. The driver signed a Custody Agreement and was released to face charges of smuggling while remaining free pending the completion of administrative procedures.
The Federal Revenue Service valued the illegal shipment at R$ 35,000. With the seizure of the VW Polo, valued at R$ 25,000, the operation resulted in a total financial loss of R$ 60,000 for the smugglers.
