Juiz de Fora Seizes 2,571 Illegal Goods in August as Part of Operation “Comércio Legal”
Municipal inspectors seized 2,571 items of unregulated merchandise in Juiz de Fora during the month of August. These actions are part of Operation Comércio Legal, carried out by the Inspection Division of the Secretariat for Urban Development with Popular Participation (SEDUPP) to regulate public spaces and combat unregulated commerce in the city.
Among the items seized were eyeglasses, socks, underwear, shorts, jackets, perfumes, lotions, soaps, and massagers without proof of origin. Household items, electronic products, and food sold without authorization or proof of origin also appeared frequently among the seizures.
Some of the goods reach retailers without a sales receipt or other document that allows their origin to be identified and traced. Inspectors take this situation into account both in operations related to the unauthorized occupation of public spaces and in the monitoring of products of unknown origin offered to consumers.
The operation also aims to combat unfair competition with licensed merchants. The lack of tax documentation or authorization to sell goods is among the violations identified during the operations carried out by the Juiz de Fora City Government.
An unlicensed seller who wishes to recover seized merchandise must follow the procedure established by municipal law. The request must be filed through the “Prefeitura Ágil” system within 15 days.
In addition to filing the request, the vendor must pay the fine and the seizure fee and submit an invoice proving ownership of the products. Compliance with these requirements is necessary for the process of returning goods that can be brought into compliance.
Items that are not processed by the deadline are donated. In the case of perishable food items that are in good sanitary condition, they are immediately sent to registered organizations.
Goods of dubious origin or that are unfit for consumption are handled differently. These products are discarded and cannot be returned to the seller.
