An operation carried out on Tuesday (5) in São José resulted in the seizure of expired, adulterated, and even counterfeit beverages in various commercial establishments in the city. The action, dubbed “Primeiro Gole” (First Sip), was conducted by the municipal Procon with the support of the Municipal Guard and the Brazilian Beverage Association (ABRABE).

The inspection aimed to protect consumers and ensure fair competition among merchants. In all, several points of sale were inspected, with a focus on identifying irregularities in the sale of alcoholic beverages. Among the problems found were products with counterfeit labels, adulterated substances, smuggled goods, unpaid taxes, and expired items.

To detect changes in the products, the team used high-precision equipment provided by ABRABE, capable of identifying changes in the composition of beverages. Whenever fraud was suspected, the items were immediately collected for further technical analysis.

The initiative is educational in nature, but also repressive, and is part of a larger effort to combat practices that endanger the health of the population and harm merchants who operate within the law. According to the agencies involved, actions such as this should continue to occur frequently in different regions of the municipality.

In addition to ensuring that what reaches consumers' tables meets safety and quality standards, the operation also seeks to reduce losses to formal trade, since the sale of illegal products creates unfair competition.

Learn about the main irregularities identified:

  • Adulteration: alteration of the original beverage by adding undue substances or dilution;

  • Counterfeiting: copying brands, labels, or packaging to deceive consumers;

  • Smuggling: illegal entry of beverages whose importation is prohibited;

  • Embezzlement: legal entry, but without payment of mandatory taxes, constituting tax evasion.

The operation reinforces the importance of constant vigilance and joint action between inspection agencies and industry entities to ensure consumer safety and fairness in commerce in São José.
