A truck loaded with a large quantity of smuggled and illegal goods was seized during a joint operation between the Mato Grosso do Sul Civil Police's Border Crimes Repression Unit (Defron) and the Federal Revenue Service's Regional Surveillance and Repression Group (GRVR) on Thursday night (26) in the urban area of Ponta Porã.

According to the information released, the vehicle was carrying cell phones, cartons of cigarettes and alcoholic beverages of foreign origin, all illegally introduced into national territory. The seizure represents an estimated loss of R$3 million to organized crime operating in the border region.

The 42-year-old driver was arrested in the act and taken to the Ponta Porã Federal Police Station, where he was charged with the crimes of smuggling and embezzlement. After the legal procedures, the truck and the cargo were sent to the Federal Revenue Service yard in Campo Grande.

The IRS said that the seized cigarettes will be destroyed, while the other products and the vehicle may be auctioned off, donated to institutions or incorporated into public use.
