Operation "Áquila" Combats Smuggling and the Illegal Entry of Goods in Southern Minas Gerais

The operation was supported by a Federal Revenue Service helicopter and resulted in the seizure of more than 700 units of weight-loss medications.
Between August 17 and 22, the Federal Revenue Service and the Minas Gerais Highway Patrol (PMRv) carried out Operation Áquila, a joint enforcement operation to combat smuggling, embezzlement, and the circulation of illegal goods brought into the country. The operation took place in southern Minas Gerais, on Highway MG-050, between the municipalities of São Sebastião do Paraíso and Piumhi.
During the five-day operation, more than 700 units of weight-loss medications were seized; their importation and sale in Brazil are prohibited by the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa). In addition, other medications and products were seized, including e-cigarettes, perfumes, cosmetics, electronics, cell phones, and laptops.
In addition to the various goods removed from circulation, four people were arrested and three vehicles were seized. Operation Áquila identified and intercepted shipments of foreign goods that had entered the country illegally and were intended for sale in Minas Gerais and in states in the North and Northeast regions of the country.
The violation stems from the fact that these products do not have authorization from Anvisa for import and sale in the country. Without this health oversight, there is no guarantee that the medications meet the quality, safety, and efficacy requirements mandated by Brazilian law, which may pose risks to consumer health.
Operation Áquila was supported by the Federal Revenue Service’s aerial team, which deployed a helicopter. The aircraft assisted in locating and tracking vehicles that attempted to flee during stops, in addition to providing logistical support in transporting detainees to the Federal Police station in Divinópolis.
Twenty Federal Revenue Service agents and 32 highway patrol officers participated in the operation, inspecting vehicles suspected of transporting foreign goods in violation of regulations.
